[10,10]
[10,10] I used LIRICS from The Wheatley School (Old Westbury) circa '70-'73. The summer of '73, Gerry Damm gave me a summer job at the center. One of the secretaries, (Donna?) picked me up at home in Roslyn Heights each morning, and dropped me off each afternoon in her purple AMC Gremlin.

I still have all of my DEC 10 manuals at home, and miles of paper tape.

I think I was PPN [10,10]. I even wrote a song, 'Hey PIP me OVER, lend me a DIR/F!'

From LIRICS to Microsoft over 25 years
From LIRICS to Microsoft over 25 years Accessing the LIRICS PDP-10 in high school (1976-1979) is where I fell in love with computers. The math department at Connetquot High School only taught a few introductory BASIC classes, but there was a lot more magic available behind those ASR33 teletypes with paper rolls and punched tape, connected at 110 baud. Through computer aided instruction and countless hours in the computer room, I was introduced to Fortran, Cobol, Algol, SNOBOL, Pascal, assembly language, TECO, and much more. To the detriment of my other studies, computers became my passion. Other kids spent their summer vacations playing. I spent mine poring over DECSystem-10 manuals, learning about linkers and loaders and editors and record information blocks. In a time when there were no personal computers or computer books to be found, the LIRICS system gave me a tremendous head start in my field.

Over the course of 25 years, I've worked in a variety of capacities. Insurance programming. Medical office programming. Office automation software. Writing a word processor. Pioneering Internet connectivity software. Chief technology officer of a .com. I wrote a few books, filed a few patents, and invented the NQL programming language. For about 15 years, I did a a great deal of development on the Alpha Micro, a minicomputer whose operating system was clearly modeled after TOPS-10. So although the PDP-10 became rather scarce, I was able to enjoy the experience for quite a long time.

Today, I'm a software engineer at Microsoft. Computers have certainly changed quite a bit in 25 years, but I'll always have a fond place in my heart for my first love, the PDP-10. Go [174,5]!

What LIRICS really stands for
What LIRICS really stands for Long Island Regional INSTRUCTIONAL Computer Service

Perhaps the name was changed later, but that was the original name.

The early student system programers were Bruce, then Marty Schultz, then me, then I'm not sure who. Marty and I (we were both from Syosset High School) actually overlapped, but I was too young to be on the official payroll at first. When Marty headed off to CMU I became the sole system programmer.

Wow...what a trip down memory lane?
Wow...what a trip down memory lane? Wow, what a trip! I actually see some old names
still around there since 1981...

While we're reminiscing...

Remember the 'mail wars'? I wonder what ever happened to Rich Lethin (and his sister, Carol)... Rich was an amazing programmer...

Remember the hours of talking...and all the talk programs (when they weren't integrated into the mail programs)?

How about that space wars program for the HZ2000?

Lots of memories. It was wild how all of the folks who did the mail systems and met at the LICUS meetings actually kind of set the stage for what we see with the Internet today.

Hope you're all doing well!

LIRICS alumnus 1973 - 1978
LIRICS alumnus 1973 - 1978 Just came across this site. We've come a *long* way since the LIRICS days but I have such fond memories of those times! If we do ever have a LIRICS reunion, I'm sure Bruce and I could tell a few interesting stories...
